It used to be Lychen’s landmark: Stargard Gate defied all adversity for more than 500 years and is pictured on numerous paintings, photographs and postcards.

However, heavy traffic (at times more tanks than trucks) put increasing strain on the medieval structure’s statics. During a winter storm in January 1976, the gate finally collapsed – allegedly shortly after a Soviet truck had crashed into it.

The heritage authorities planned to rebuild it back then. However, work has not yet begun…
