Construction of the town church began immediately after the town was founded in the middle of the 13th century. During the first decades, when the town wall had not yet been built, the church probably also served as a place of refuge for the people of Lychen in the event of attacks. 

The early Gothic fieldstone building, dedicated to St. John the Baptist since 1302, was extended and rebuilt several times over the centuries. A major town fire destroyed the original interior in 1684. When it was rebuilt, the church was given a baroque high altar and a gallery.
