Lychen’s Drawing Pin Walk
Postal depot
Lychen is a rafting town: for centuries, timber from the forest was transported to Berlin by water. As the city grew rapidly, it needed wooden piles to secure buildings in the sandy ground, beams for roof trusses, ceilings and walls as well as boards for interior fittings.
The Lychen raftsmen had to use a lot of strength and skill to bring the logs into the water and nail them together to form rafts.
This site used to be a timber storage facility, which was called the “Postal Depot“ following the construction of the Imperial Post Office next to it in 1904.
