Fürstenberg Gate
Lychen’s town wall once sported three gates. Here at the Fürstenberg Gate, there is believed to have been an outer bailey to ward off attackers from entering the town.
At that time, there was a bridge between the outer bailey and the gate – because in the Middle Ages an artificial moat (6 meters wide, almost 2 meters deep) ran in front of the town wall, connecting the lakes.
The gate collapsed in the 18th century and the moat was filled in. Only the gatehouse continued to be used to collect customs duties for some time.
